Tignale on the western side of the Lake is an amalgamation of various small towns, the biggest of which is Gardola. All of them are embedded in the middle of a beautiful mountainous region. Many of the houses date back to between the 17.-19.th century and have fine portals made of stone. The plateau of Tignale is ideal for extensive walks during which again and again outstanding views of the Lake are offered. Also worth a visit is Madonna di Montecastello, a pilgrimage church on top of a steep cliff, which can be reached via a small footpath.
