The capital city of the province of Lombardy, Brescia, is located at a distance of about 30 kilometres from the south-western shore of Lake Garda and due to its numerous art treasures worth a visit. The cultural monuments of this city bear witness to the city’s past 2000 years, and this almost without any gaps. When walking through the old town centre you come across buildings dating from Roman times, early Christian sacral arts, Romanesque and Gothic churches as well as impressive squares and palaces. Worth a visit is also the town museum located in the former cloister Santa Giulia, which has been built on the ruins of a Roman villa.
The position of the city is also charming. Brescia is surrounded by a circle of hills, on top of these small villages and beautiful villas are situated. On top of Cidneo-hill in the middle of the city you can admire the fortress of the Visconti family. From there you can enjoy a wonderful view over of the sea of roofs of the old town centre with its numerous cupolas and towers.
Every day there is a market on the Piazza del Mercato and on Piazza della Loggia you can visit a weekly market each Saturday. Most shops in the city are to be found in the streets around Piazza della Loggia where there are also numerous bars and cafes.
